Copper deficiency mimicking myelodysplastic syndrome
نویسنده
چکیده
Copper is an essential element for all living organisms, because it has key activities in the metabolic enzymes such as cytochrome oxidase and superoxide dismutase, and in the proteins essential for iron homeostasis such as ceruloplasmin and hephaestin. In humans, the daily copper requirement is low, therefore copper deficiency is not so frequently a condition. However, we should be aware that copper deficiency can cause hematological abnormalities and sometimes it may masquerade as a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Copper deficiency is mainly associated with the conditions, such as gastric and bariatric surgery, parenteral hyperalimentation, enteroparthies with loss of proteins, hypoproteinemic status such as celiac disease, complications due to therapy with high doses of zinc and penicillamine, and chronic use of proton pump inhibitors. Copper deficiency can be associated with hyperzinchemia; in some cases, this condition could be a consequence of possible use of zinc based denture adhesives creams. The copper deficiency may also be the result of an inherited disorder, such as the Menkes disease. Copper deficiency and cytopenia

Copper deficiency mimicking myelodysplastic syndrome
Copper deficiency is a rare cause of pancytopenia that may be mistaken for myelodysplastic syndrome. Cytoplasmic vacuolization in erythroid and myeloid precursors is found on bone marrow examination. Patients with a history of abdominal surgery who present with anemia and neutropenia with dysplastic changes should have copper levels checked.
متن کاملCopper deficiency myeloneuropathy in a patient with haemachromatosis: a case report
A 64-year-old British Caucasian man presented with red skin wheals and breathlessness and then developed a progressive neurological syndrome. Investigation revealed hereditary haemachromatosis, porphyria, and a myelodysplastic syndrome. No unifying diagnosis was made, and his neurological symptoms remained unexplained, until further studies revealed an underlying copper deficiency.

متن کاملCopper deficiency: an important consideration in the differential diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome.
Copper deficiency is an etiology of anemia, neutropenia, and bone marrow dysplasia that may be under-recognized. We report 5 patients with clinical presentation consistent with MDS who were found to be deficient in copper and whose hematologic abnormalities resolved with copper supplementation. We recommend copper level assessment in patients suspected of having low-risk MDS, especially those w...
متن کاملCopper deficiency, a new triad: anemia, leucopenia, and myeloneuropathy
Clinical copper deficiency is now more frequently recognized. Hematologically, it can present as anemia (microcytic, normocytic, or macrocytic) and neutropenia. Thrombocytopenia is relatively rare. Neurologically, it can manifest as myelopathy and peripheral neuropathy simulating subacute combined degeneration. Bone marrow findings can mimic myelodysplasia resulting in occasional inappropriate ...
